The Bulgarian enforcement system and cameras are designed to recognize license plates with diacritical marks while the vehicle is in transit.

Warning: Entering a toll motorway or expressway without a valid Bulgarian vignette will result in a fine of 300 lev. Please wait until your vignette is activated. You will receive confirmation and the activated vignette via email.

Enter the license plate number using capital letters, without commas, dashes, or spaces.

Bulgarian license plates use letters that are the same in both Cyrillic and Latin alphabets (A, B, E, K, M, H, O, P, C, T, Y, X). You can enter the license plate using either alphabet, but it must exactly match the plate.

Some foreign license plates from older series or those not following European standardization may include diacritical marks:

  • The characters Ä, Ö, Ü must be entered exactly as they appear on the license plate.
  • The characters Č, Ć, Ž, Š, and Đ should be replaced with their standard Latin equivalents: C, Z, S, and D.

Please note that the symbols 0 (zero) and O (the letter) are not interchangeable.

In Bulgaria, the e-vignette control system operates through a combination of stationary and mobile cameras that scan vehicle license plates. The system checks whether vehicles driving on toll roads have a valid e-vignette. These cameras are installed at strategic points along highways and major roads, and mobile units regularly patrol to ensure compliance.

The e-vignette is mandatory for all light vehicles using Bulgaria’s toll road network, and failure to purchase one results in penalties. If a vehicle is detected without a valid e-vignette, the owner receives a fine. The penalties vary depending on the type of vehicle and the duration of the violation.

For light vehicles, fines typically range from 150 BGN (approximately 75 EUR) for a short-term violation. For heavy goods vehicles, fines can be significantly higher, depending on the class and distance traveled without a valid toll payment. Additionally, repeated offenses may lead to increased penalties or further legal actions.

The control system's efficiency relies heavily on automatic detection, so drivers need to ensure that they have a valid e-vignette before entering toll roads to avoid these fines.
